Woodworking With Lucy is created to help open the door to woodworking for beginners and to women. It’s not easy to get started in a hobby that features so many high powered tools. They can be both intimidating and expensive. It takes a lot of work to develop a comfort level with a sharp toothed blade speeding at 5,000 rpms! Don’t worry, Lucy is here to help! I am a self-taught woodworker myself so I know a little about taking on the learning curve and I want to give you a leg up.
Woodworking for beginners is no different than any other enterprise. Woodworkers have our specialized equipment, our scope of influence, our own vocabulary and, our own stories. Woodworkers have history. Actually, we have quite a long history as working wood goes back tens of thousands of years, to the very beginnings of civilization. I find that comforting because it means that simple people without any books, or videos or power tools taught themselves to use wood to build a more comfortable world. All we’ve done since then is create a more sophisticated package. Woodworking is just as available to today’s beginning woodworker as it was to our distant ancestors.
Fortunately, we don’t need to fashion bows and arrows to hunt for our dinner, (although, we could.) If we need a meal, we can buy it. We can buy the table to sit at, the chair to sit on and the cabinet in which to store our dishes. For most of us, working with wood is something we can simply choose to do for the pure enjoyment of it. What matters most is that we do it safely. Our skills will build over time. So, prowl around the pages, sketch some ideas on a napkin and let’s get the trip under way!
